The mathematics department Message

Dear Parents, Learners and the stake holders of Gayaza Junior School warm greetings from the mathematics department.
Mathematics being the queen of all subjects, it should not be taught as an isolated skill. It should be intergraded with other subjects by drawing mathematical experiences out of the wide range of learners’ activities.
As teachers of Mathematics we face a lot of challenges when teaching mathematics, such as;

  • Negative attitude of the learners towards the subject, thinking that mathematics is only for the genius.
  • Parents thinking that mathematics teachers are not doing enough for their children to perform well in mathematics.

So I call upon my fellow teachers of mathematics to always teach using practical approaches and all the methods used should be learner friendly
I urge you to use concrete objects and real life experiences while teaching; this will help to make learning meaningful.
Learners should be allowed to formulate their own questions and discuss them with their classmates as this will help them gain confidence in mathematics
I thank the school administration for all the support given to the department.

Message from English language department

We warmly welcome you to this great school’s site.  We cherish your enormous contributions towards the development of our school and our girls in particular. “We Are, because You Are.”
Language plays an important role in one’s life; communications and delivery greatly depend on one’s proficiency in language. The English language is the medium of instruction to the juniors and it’s upon that background that the department of English emphasizes the right usage of the language because it cuts across all disciplines.
The department encourages usage of correct grammatical expressions so as to enable the girls to acquire the basics of this language that will later help them be out spoken readers, speakers and writers. Emphasis is also put on the development of the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This has enabled the juniors attain the best grades in their final Examinations.
The natural acquisition of the language at Gayaza Junior School makes the girls to gain confidence as they express their views on different topics. As a department we embrace debating impromptu, speeches, reading of newspapers and novels to help the girls enrich their English language and vocabulary.

Message from Social Studies Department

Greetings from the Social studies department.
Dear readers, I have a lot to share with you about this subject, but we shall make do with a few.
First and foremost people, most people don’t value, you are lucky if you can see its significance. Many Parents and even teachers who teach the subject have not gone deep to make our children know its importance.
On many occasions, I have heard both parents and teachers telling their children that this is the easiest subject to pass, this makes our pupils to study social studies just for the sake of getting results to take them to the next level.
WHY DO WE TEACH SOCIAL STUDIES?

  • -To encourage our children appreciate nature or for environmental awareness
  • -To expose our children to many life experiences which will help them solve problems in life.
  • -It helps children discover themselves
  • -It teaches children to value all people around them.
  • -Children are equipped with skills to exploit nature wisely and profitably
  • -Furthermore, learning about the different religions, social and cultural beliefs, castes and creed, nationalities and ethnicity, languages, festivals, food and clothing, types of families, etc makes students aware that the society they live in, is diverse and multicultural and yet there is interdependence and inter-relatedness between different people, cultures, families, religions and countries.

HOW CAN WE AS TEACHERS IMPROVE SOCIAL STUDIES PERFORMANCE

  • -We should find ways of making the pupils love the subject
  • -Teach the values of social studies in our lives
  • -Encourage the pupils to have interest in current affairs
  • -Read more books to have enough research
  • -Create a talking relationship both in class and the school compound
  • -Have practical lessons
  • -Take children to field trips
  • -Create a good child teacher relationship

The inclusion of social studies in the curriculum right from primary to secondary classes signifies the importance of the subject and the role it plays in a student’s life. Social studies is incorporated in the school curriculum through a combination of subjects like; History, Geography, Cultural Studies, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology etc
Thus, we can conclude that incorporating Social Studies in the school curriculum ensures well-rounded education of our children

Message from Games and sports department

Praise God, warm GREETINGS from the games and sports department. According to the ministry of Education and Sports primary school curriculum, Physical education is a key subject and it should be included on the school timetable. Gayaza Junior School being a loyal school to the government education policies, P.E is given priority. We have four competing houses in the school which wear four different colours as shown below. Algeria (yellow), Angola (red), Ghana (blue) and Zambia (green). These four African countries are derived from the word GAYAZA. Physical fitness is good because it helps the body to be healthy and a healthy mind lives in a healthy body. 2018 sports day results were as follows Algeria 1st, Angola 2nd, Zambia 3rd and Ghana 4th
