THE JOURNEY OF LIFE AT GAYAZA JUNIOR JJUNGO CAMPUS
Life is compared to a journey made by bus. There can be humps, traffic lights, obstacles and so forth. Likewise, that is how life is. When I came from my former school to Gayaza Junior School, God had made a perfect plan for me. I was told that I was to go to Jjungo Campus. At first, I was scared because that place was so distant from home.
I thought I would have a lot of challenges because I had no relatives there. It was P.2 Term II 2016 The classroom floor was made of concrete, the dormitory floor had plastic carpets, the building was still under construction and the area had pit latrines. A year later, some problems were solved. The floors were tiled. I could then see the light of it all. But there was still a challenge of studying from the dining room, where we had meals from and prayers as well.
With the Almighty’s help, everything became extra ordinary.
While there, I enjoyed the fruit, the cool climate, and the aeroplanes that always passed over. I learnt to be responsible since I was a

MY MEMORIES ABOUT GAYAZA JUNIOR – JJUNGO CAMPUS
I was in Jjungo Campus in 2016 and left in 2017 I hadn’t known much about boarding school but here I am as a witness.
By the time we started studying from Jjungo, our floors were made of concrete. We used to clean them by sprinkling water. For the dormitories, we used to have carpets on the floor. We used to have pit latrines by then. The dining hall used to be our church for prayers at school. The edibles for Saturday were sold
from the tables out of the dining room. We used to go for sports training from the field of the neighbouring school, Jjungo Church of Uganda Primary School.
After trainings, we could be served with jambula, mangoes, guavas and other fruits. We could also see aeroplanes flying over the school thinking that our parents were in them.
I thank God for providing knowledge and money to all the committee members and our parents who have made Jjungo Campus a well developed place.

MY MEMORIES ABOUT GAYAZA JUNIOR – JJUNGO CAMPUS
I am in Primary Seven in Gayaza Junior School.
I would like to share with you my experience I had at Jjungo Campus.
It was Primary Two, the first class I had at Jjungo Campus. It was such a new environment that I didn’t know anyone there.
But because of the caring teachers and matrons we had, they used to guide us and encourage us to study hard because some of us, it was our first time to attend a boarding school. The cooks used to prepare for us delicious meals, the matrons used to teach us prayers, take readings from the Luganda Bible and songs in the hymn book. The farmers used to fight so hard to get for us herbal medicine from the garden especially when we suffered from cough and flu.
The nurses at the sickbay used to provide us with medical services,
care and love. Not forgetting our beloved Headteacher, Mrs. Kizito Sarah for the provisions and the care, and the nice teachers who were involved. I thank the parents for the financial contributions for the construction of Jjungo Campus. I thank you so much for the assistance you provided to us.
I thank the Almighty God for protecting all of us and making Jjungo Campus a well developed school than before.

CELEBRATING GOGA GOMESI 2022
THE AMAZING STORY BEHIND THE GOMESI
BORN AND EVOLVED AT GAYAZA HIGH SCHOOL
The story of the Gomesi dates back to 1905 at the birth of Gayaza School. The Headmistress of Gayaza School, Miss. Alfreda Allen asked Mr. A. G. Gomesi to design a uniform for her girls.
The Gomesi was fashioned and developed between 1905 and 1915 by an Indian of Goan descent called Gomesi after whom the Gomesi takes its name.
The first school uniform of Gayaza girls was “suuka” made of bark cloth. It was tied under the armpits leaving the shoulders bear. Miss. Allen asked A.G. Gomesi to make a “suuka” of cotton as it would be more durable. The “suuka” unraveled during
manual work, so A.G. Gomesi added a yoke, this was the part fitting around the shoulders and from which the rest of the dress hanged. That was protype gomesi. A.G. Gomesi added a sash around the waist. It was longer, wider and stiffer.
He went on in 1914, which is considered as the birth-year of modern gomesi, to incorporate aspects of Victorian/Edwardian dresses.
These included puffed sleeves with a square neckline and the Sari from Gomesi homeland, Goa.
At Gayaza High School the development of the Busuuti or Gomesi now regarded by many as a national dress was accomplished. “Busuuti” comes from suit.
Gomesi has been called “Bodingi” that name also harks back to Gayaza as the first girls’ boarding school in Uganda.
Gayaza School owns the Busuuti or Gomesi. It was born and made the great garment of Uganda’s women at Gayaza. The GOGA GOMESI resembles the Gayaza Sunday Uniform which is a white dress with a red belt. The Gomesi is white in colour and has a red sash. This year 2022 therefore, we celebrate and crown the GOGA GOMESI.
